

{"id":51,"date":"2022-05-11T12:34:09","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T19:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peden.ece.uw.edu\/computing\/?page_id=51"},"modified":"2026-01-21T10:36:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T18:36:18","slug":"computing-support-guidelines","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/peden.ece.uw.edu\/computing\/computing-support-guidelines\/","title":{"rendered":"Computing Support Guidelines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead1\"><strong>This document provides a basic guideline regarding what support is offered by ECE Computing to faculty, staff, and official visitors.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Support offered to permanent faculty and staff<\/h3>\n<p>The department (IT Computing) provides the following support to UW ECE faculty and staff for UW owned &amp; registered (UW Asset tag) hardware:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Desktop\/Laptop computer and monitor<\/li>\n<li>Licensed software<\/li>\n<li>Printing support (Main Office &amp; M311 Ricoh&#8217;s)<\/li>\n<li>Network connection issues inside faculty offices (Wall ports)<\/li>\n<li>Windows 11 and Unix (macOS 14 Sonoma) Troubleshooting Support<\/li>\n<li>Faculty laptop\\Desktop (Software support &amp; Limited Hardware support):\n<ul>\n<li>Only department owned laptops\\desktops will be supported<\/li>\n<li>One (1) laptop\\desktop per faculty will be supported (registered with IT Computing Group)<\/li>\n<li>Operating Systems supported: Windows 11 Enterprise and macOS 14 Sonoma\n<ul>\n<li>supported devices located here: <a href=\"https:\/\/peden.ece.uw.edu\/computing\/facstaff-only\/standard-computer-purchase\/\">https:\/\/peden.ece.uw.edu\/computing\/facstaff-only\/standard-computer-purchase\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Only licensed software that the IT Computing Group distributes for laptops will be supported<\/li>\n<li>Faculty are responsible for all data backups &amp; ensuring that there is an admin password on the device (at time of support, if needed)<\/li>\n<li>Supported laptops\\desktops will be under warranty, all others will be on a case by case scenario<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lost or Stolen Computer! Report an Incident immediately!<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Report any incident or potential data breach immediately. Follow the link below to start the process:<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ois.uw.edu\/report\/#more\">https:\/\/ois.uw.edu\/report\/#more<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"visitors\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 24pt;\">Support offered to research faculty (recently appointed) and support staff<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 data-start=\"276\" data-end=\"313\">General Research Support Policies<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"314\" data-end=\"336\"><strong data-start=\"314\" data-end=\"336\">IT Computing Group<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"338\" data-end=\"396\">1. Scope of Complimentary Support (Startup Period Only)<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"398\" data-end=\"706\">The IT Computing Group provides <strong data-start=\"430\" data-end=\"461\">limited, time-bound support<\/strong> to research laboratories <strong data-start=\"487\" data-end=\"546\">only during the first year of a new lab\u2019s startup phase<\/strong>. This initial support is intended to assist with foundational infrastructure setup and does <strong data-start=\"639\" data-end=\"646\">not<\/strong> include ongoing or advanced research system administration (research servers and\/or research related software).<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"708\" data-end=\"711\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"713\" data-end=\"760\">2. Services Included During the Startup Year<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"762\" data-end=\"845\">During the one-year startup period, the following support services may be provided:<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"847\" data-end=\"861\">Networking<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"862\" data-end=\"994\">\n<li data-start=\"862\" data-end=\"930\">\n<p data-start=\"864\" data-end=\"930\">Installation of (approved &amp; purchased) network switches and cabling within the laboratory<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"931\" data-end=\"994\">\n<p data-start=\"933\" data-end=\"994\">Integration of lab systems into the approved research network (networking and firewall rules)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"996\" data-end=\"1020\">Procurement Guidance<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1021\" data-end=\"1261\">\n<li data-start=\"1021\" data-end=\"1101\">\n<p data-start=\"1023\" data-end=\"1101\">Consultation on the selection and purchase of appropriate PCs for research use (if requested)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1102\" data-end=\"1188\">\n<p data-start=\"1104\" data-end=\"1188\">Assistance with initial installation of supported Windows 11, Windows Server 2025 or Linux (Alma)\u00a0 operating systems<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1189\" data-end=\"1261\">\n<p data-start=\"1191\" data-end=\"1261\">Configuration of administrative access required for future maintenance of lab PC&#8217;s<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"1263\" data-end=\"1292\">Physical Computer Support<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1293\" data-end=\"1652\">\n<li data-start=\"1293\" data-end=\"1503\">\n<p data-start=\"1295\" data-end=\"1335\">Limited support for lab PCs <strong data-start=\"1323\" data-end=\"1334\">only if<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1338\" data-end=\"1503\">\n<li data-start=\"1338\" data-end=\"1385\">\n<p data-start=\"1340\" data-end=\"1385\">The system is joined to the ECE domain, and<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1388\" data-end=\"1503\">\n<p data-start=\"1390\" data-end=\"1503\">The system meets the IT Computing Group\u2019s standard support requirements, including a supported operating system<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1504\" data-end=\"1652\">\n<p data-start=\"1506\" data-end=\"1540\">This support <strong data-start=\"1519\" data-end=\"1539\">does not include<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1543\" data-end=\"1652\">\n<li data-start=\"1543\" data-end=\"1595\">\n<p data-start=\"1545\" data-end=\"1595\">Installation or maintenance of research software<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1598\" data-end=\"1652\">\n<p data-start=\"1600\" data-end=\"1652\">Support for specialized peripherals or lab equipment<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"1654\" data-end=\"1704\">Server Acquisition &amp; Installation (Rack Installation Only)<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1705\" data-end=\"1980\">\n<li data-start=\"1705\" data-end=\"1772\">\n<p data-start=\"1707\" data-end=\"1772\">Guidance in identifying and procuring appropriate server hardware<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1773\" data-end=\"1882\">\n<p data-start=\"1775\" data-end=\"1882\">Physical rack mounting of servers in the designated research server room, <strong data-start=\"1849\" data-end=\"1882\">subject to space availability<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1883\" data-end=\"1980\">\n<p data-start=\"1885\" data-end=\"1980\">Server room access is limited to business hours and requires the presence of IT Computing staff<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1982\" data-end=\"2152\">\u26a0 <strong data-start=\"1984\" data-end=\"1998\">Important:<\/strong><br data-start=\"1998\" data-end=\"2001\" \/>Ongoing server administration, maintenance, monitoring, patching, backups, troubleshooting, and recovery <strong data-start=\"2106\" data-end=\"2126\">are not included<\/strong> in complimentary support.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2154\" data-end=\"2157\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2159\" data-end=\"2206\">3. Research Server Support Is a Paid Service<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2208\" data-end=\"2253\">Support for research servers <strong data-start=\"2237\" data-end=\"2252\">is not free<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2255\" data-end=\"2578\">\n<li data-start=\"2255\" data-end=\"2357\">\n<p data-start=\"2257\" data-end=\"2357\">After initial installation, <strong data-start=\"2285\" data-end=\"2357\">all ongoing server support is the responsibility of the research lab<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2358\" data-end=\"2441\">\n<p data-start=\"2360\" data-end=\"2441\">Continued IT Computing Group involvement requires a <strong data-start=\"2412\" data-end=\"2441\">formal, paid support plan<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2442\" data-end=\"2578\">\n<p data-start=\"2444\" data-end=\"2471\">Paid support plans must be:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2474\" data-end=\"2578\">\n<li data-start=\"2474\" data-end=\"2493\">\n<p data-start=\"2476\" data-end=\"2493\">Clearly defined<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2496\" data-end=\"2526\">\n<p data-start=\"2498\" data-end=\"2526\">Approved by the department<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2529\" data-end=\"2578\">\n<p data-start=\"2531\" data-end=\"2578\">Funded by the research lab or sponsoring unit<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2580\" data-end=\"2698\">Without an approved support plan, IT Computing does <strong data-start=\"2632\" data-end=\"2639\">not<\/strong> provide ongoing server maintenance or operational support.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2700\" data-end=\"2703\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2705\" data-end=\"2727\">4. Storage Guidance<\/h2>\n<ul data-start=\"2729\" data-end=\"2960\">\n<li data-start=\"2729\" data-end=\"2864\">\n<p data-start=\"2731\" data-end=\"2768\">IT Computing can provide guidance on:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2771\" data-end=\"2864\">\n<li data-start=\"2771\" data-end=\"2809\">\n<p data-start=\"2773\" data-end=\"2809\">On-site and off-site storage options<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2812\" data-end=\"2864\">\n<p data-start=\"2814\" data-end=\"2864\">University of Washington\u2013provided storage services<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2865\" data-end=\"2960\">\n<p data-start=\"2867\" data-end=\"2960\">At this time, <strong data-start=\"2881\" data-end=\"2926\">no complimentary on-site research storage<\/strong> is available through IT Computing<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"2962\" data-end=\"2965\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2967\" data-end=\"3005\">5. Post-Startup &amp; Emergency Support<\/h2>\n<ul data-start=\"3007\" data-end=\"3311\">\n<li data-start=\"3007\" data-end=\"3178\">\n<p data-start=\"3009\" data-end=\"3082\">After the one-year startup period, any research support requests will be:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3085\" data-end=\"3178\">\n<li data-start=\"3085\" data-end=\"3124\">\n<p data-start=\"3087\" data-end=\"3124\">Evaluated on a <strong data-start=\"3102\" data-end=\"3124\">case-by-case basis<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3127\" data-end=\"3178\">\n<p data-start=\"3129\" data-end=\"3178\">Subject to availability and departmental approval<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3179\" data-end=\"3311\">\n<p data-start=\"3181\" data-end=\"3311\">Emergency assistance for both new and existing research labs is <strong data-start=\"3245\" data-end=\"3263\">not guaranteed<\/strong> and does not replace a formal support agreement<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"3313\" data-end=\"3316\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"3318\" data-end=\"3377\">6. Information on obtaining a NetID can be found on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washington.edu\/itconnect\/accounts\/\">UW&#8217;s &#8220;Accounts and Passwords&#8221; page<\/a>.
