H-1B H-1B is a nonimmigrant status held by a foreign national performing services in a “specialty occupation.”

The following titles can hold this visa:

  • Professor
  • Lecturer
  • Research Associate (post-doctoral, and only if the person has held an Optional Practical Training [OPT]).
J-1 The UW’s Exchange Visitor Program sponsors foreign nationals as temporary members of the academic staff, including:

  • Visiting faculty
  • Visiting researchers (Research Associates, Visiting Scientists, Visiting Scholars)
  • Visiting international Professional Scholars
  • VISIT Program Interns
F-1 The purpose of the F-1 Visa is to bring in academic students to study and earn their respective degree(’s).

Persons who would be eligible for the F-1 visa are all students who would meet the qualifications outlined by Electrical Engineering Department, International Scholars Office, and the University of Washington.
