Bringing in an Exchange Visitor or Hiring a Research Associate in 4 Easy Steps!
1. Visit the ECE Appointments and Hiring page;
2. Determine, based on criteria set for each appointment type, what title fits the faculty sponsor and the scholar’s situation and needs the best;
3. Note the fees and salary requirements (if applicable) requested involved in processing appointments and different visas (important);
4. Fill out with the appointment details the Visitor/Research Associate Notification to Chair a minimum of three to six months before the individual’s start date*.
Once the Assistant to the Chair has the appointment information, he or she will contact and work directly with the Exchange Scholar or Research Associate to collect the required documents needed to process the work visa and appointment.
* ISO (International Scholars Office) and the Assistant to the Chair both request a minimum of three to six months of advance notice (a minimum of seven months for H-1B visas) to process a visa application and appointment paperwork. Approvals for both processed require approval from various offices, which takes time. Notifying the Assistant to the Chair three to six months in advance assures everything the process runs smoothly, efficiently, and correctly. The more time a visitor has to meet with the US Consulate in their home country to interview and obtain a visa, the better.
