All new paid employees must have a SSN. Though it is not required for an employee to have a SSN to be initially placed on payroll, it is important to obtain one as soon as possible. Please make sure that your name on your social security card matches your passport.
How to Obtain a SSN
- If you are a student, fill out the Social Security Verification Form and have the Payroll Manager and ISS fill out their respective sections. If you are not a student, obtain your official appointment letter that you received upon initial hire.
- Fill out the Application for Social Security Card.
- No sooner than 10 days after entering the U.S., take all of your travel documentation (I-20 or DS-2019, passport, and I-94), your Social Security Verification Form or official appointment letter, and your Application for Social Security Card to the Social Security Administration Office to apply for a SSN.
What to do Once You Have a SSN
- Bring your Social Security Card to the ECE Payroll Office AND to the Student Registration Office so that your number can be entered into the payroll and student databases.
NOTE: For the databases to be updated, you must bring in the actual card itself, not just the number. - Review tax treaty exemption information and submit forms as applicable.
