Overview

Visiting International Student Internship & Training (VISIT), 1-12 months
Visiting International Student Engaged in Research (VISER), 13-24 months

Criteria

Faculty, please start the process be following the Steps to Bring in an Exchange Visitor or Research Associate.  For further clarification or additional questions relating to hiring this title not addressed here, please contact the Assistant to the Chair.

Appointment

  1. Faculty member (PI) fills out the online Visitor/Research Associate Notification to Chair. Submitting this form will initiate emails sent to the Assistant to the Chair, the Chair, space committee, payroll, facilities, the receptionist and to your Program Manager.
  2. Assistant to the Chair completes Part A-C and J-L of the J VISIT Visa Request Form OR J VISER Visa Request form.
  3. Assistant to the Chair sends the PI VISIT Training Placement Plan – Supervisor Questions.doc OR VISER Placement Plan.doc in order to prepare the Training/Internship Placement Plan.
  4. Assistant to the Chair contacts the prospective candidate for the required documentation, listed below:
    • Documentation Required:
      • J VISIT Visa Request Form OR J VISER Visa Request form with completed Parts D-H
      • Curriculum Vitae – please include current mailing address
      • Visa documents, if applicable
        • A copy of his or her passport ID page and for any accompanying dependents
        • Financial documentation (in English) showing sufficient support for him- or herself and any dependents for the entire stay in the United States, including the VISIT Program Fee, other quarterly fees, sickness and accident insurance, and housing and living expense.  Examples of satisfactory documentation of financial support are a copy of a bank statement and/or a sponsor letter on letterhead that includes the intern’s name, the amount and dates/duration of sponsorship.
  5. After receiving documentation from the intern, the Assistant to the Chair finishes filling out the Training/Internship Placement Plan.
  6. Assistant to the Chair sends the Training/Internship Placement Plan to the intern to sign.
  7. Upon receipt of the intern’s ink signature on the Training/Internship Placement Plan, the Assistant to the Chair gets the supervisor’s and department chair’s signature.
  8. Assistant to the Chair submits the 1025-J with attachments (signed DS-7002, passport ID copy, financial documentation, and resume or CV) to the College of Engineering for approval.
  9. College of Engineering then forwards this information to IELP, VISIT, Box 359450.
  10. IELP then works directly with ISO and the student intern to complete the process.
